Moon, 2023

The moon is full tonight.

When I was a child, like many other families, my parents bought me science books, hoping that I would grow up to become an intelligent person.

Among those books, my favorite was the one about the moon. It was filled with photographs of the moon. I remember going outside with that book and comparing the pictures whenever the shape of the moon changed.

I can see lunar craters. I can also see the lunar seas. Ah, of course, they are not real seas. Someone once gave those dark areas the name “seas.” Looking through a telescope, Johannes Kepler thought they were bodies of water, and so he named them that way. But I like the name. If there really were a sea on the moon, I would want to swim there and bathe while looking up at the night sky.

In fact, the moon is connected to the sea. When the moon is full, the seawater rises.

Because gravity changes. There are studies showing that about 70 percent of the human body is made of water, and that this, too, can affect a person’s emotions. There are also stories that say the full moon drives people mad. In a way, I think our world is governed by the moon.

Now I observe it with the naked eye. Clouds cover the moon, but they receive the moonlight, revealing different shades of color and creating a deeply mysterious atmosphere. It is as if there were a small hole in the black sky, and a long tunnel were connected to it. The color is so beautiful that people cannot help imagining the moon.

I wonder what I imagined when I looked at the moon as a child, when I loved photographs of the moon so much.
