Cronoscope, 2023

Cronoscope reproduces a natural phenomenon (cron*) : the slow deposition of limestone over time.

I developed a system in which limestone-rich water flows across surfaces for six months, gradually accumulating mineral layers.
This geological process becomes a “time machine,” revealing the silent traces of the past.

The installation unfolds across three locations: a spring, a public space, and the exhibition room.
It offers viewers a sensory experience of time, situated between geology and cosmology.

1. Cron refers to a phenomenon associated with petrifying limestone springs.
The water source is located at a higher elevation and flows down a slope.
Over time, limestone is deposited, creating a particular environment.
In other words, it is the result of multiple natural environments meeting, connecting, and accumulating over a long period of time.

To reproduce this phenomenon, I repeatedly poured water mixed with limestone through a tube over a period of six months.
This allowed limestone to accumulate at the bottom of the container.
When it rains, the accumulated limestone dissolves and falls to the ground, forming a circular trace around it.
As the audience encounters the work, they experience geological time and cosmic time through these accumulated traces.

After the Rain

Earth.

It has rained.
I can feel the moisture in the air.
The earthy smell, mixed with wet grass and wood, grows denser; meanwhile, sound disappears.
A silent evolution begins.
The earth absorbs the rainwater.. Gradually, it passes through the soil, transforming the ground.

Around the flowing spring,

all phenomena are organically connected. But this is not a question of harmony.
They change and exist together within the same time and the same space.
I too am here, as an entity.
Where is my destiny heading within this immense current of evolution that has unfolded and will continue to unfold in the distant future?

Night.

Sky.

After the rain, networks of light appear above a clear sky.
These luminous networks are far away, yet everything on this earth, including myself, comes from there.
We are all migrants, born in the stars and settled on Earth.
That is why we feel such deep nostalgia when we look upward ;
perhaps because the memory of the stars remains engraved in our depths?

Although the earth and the sky seem separate, they remain connected through the memory of the stars.

Night again.

Now I become dust and travel through a dark void.
Toward the next migration, toward a return to light.
Once again, I am within the current of evolution.
