My research begins with small discoveries and expands into a macroscopic perspective, creating a contrast between what is infinitely distant and what is close at hand.” Daeseok An constructs a complex and poetic visual environment shaped by scientific and cosmological inquiry. His practice explores the origins of the universe and the laws that govern it, tracing a path that seeks to connect human beings with their beginnings through the gaze of a child looking up at the night sky. At the core of his work is an effort to bring together cosmic perspective, personal experience, and imagination in order to create multilayered and spatial narratives. An’s approach resembles the process of constructing science fiction. What makes science fiction compelling is its capacity to reflect complexity through imagination. Yet within the microscopic world and the vast scale of the universe, physical concepts that transcend time, space, and dimension often appear profoundly unreal. From this tension emerges a sense of dissonance, born from the blurred boundary between reality and unreality. For the artist, it is precisely this dissonance that gives rise to complex poetic emotion. To articulate this perspective, An employs optical devices in photographic prints and image projections. The lens becomes a medium that connects us to the microscopic world, producing a tension between what is infinitely distant and what lies immediately before us. When observing astronomical objects, the artist considers the fleeting experience of forming a personal connection with the universe to be more significant than the discovery of visually spectacular celestial bodies. Images produced today by space agencies are reconstructed through multiple processes and often become overwhelmingly beautiful and captivating. Yet while such images may be enough to evoke a vague illusion of the universe, they also risk fixing it into a static and predetermined form. In actual observation, the universe does not appear with clarity, but it leaves an extraordinarily powerful impression. As Carl Sagan writes in Cosmos¹, “Humans and the universe are connected in the most fundamental way.” With this in mind, An develops his work through discoveries drawn from geography, historical records, natural phenomena, and personal experience. He projects the expansion of the universe onto clouds formed by smoke rising from a nuclear power plant², and imagines the continuity of space-time through crystallized limestone³, where the distant past and the present intersect. This movement of thought traverses external reality and the inner microscopic world, ultimately leading to questions about our origins. In the end, the exploration of the universe becomes a way of understanding the foundations of humanity. As Sagan suggests, not only the major events of human history, but also the smallest and seemingly most insignificant ones, are rooted in the origin of the universe that surrounds us. 1. I transpose this narrative into a contemporary context by pursuing a nuclear cloud over a period of three months, camera in hand. Two videos are projected through lenses: one documents my pursuit of clouds, while the other presents a constellation of images drawn from astronomical software and space archives. The sound, recorded at the Cattenom nuclear power plant, immerses the viewer in a sensory and cosmic landscape. This work questions our relationship to origins, light, and memory. Mon rêve d’enfance de devenir astronaute est un pont du temps, reliant mon passé et mon présent. L’œuvre que je propose, utilise des techniques de photographie analogique pour visualiser des souvenirs déformés, à travers des télescopes et la réfraction de la lumière. Autrefois, les astronomes enregistraient le ciel à l’aide d’objectifs et de plaques de verre sèches, qui reflétaient la réfraction de la lumière avec plus de précision que la technologie numérique moderne. Mon travail est une œuvre photographique argentique basée sur des images de corps célestes extraites de la carte Stellarium*. Je les ai obtenues en observant directement le ciel. Mes expériences et souvenirs personnels se sont transformés en fragments de texte, associés à des notions de temps, de lumière et de distances en astronomie. Ces fragments d’histoires, imprimés sur chaque lentille, sont reliés entre eux pour créer une sorte de cartographie. Les moments forts et les souvenirs précieux que je pensaisne jamais oublier semblent s’être évaporés dans le tempset la distance qu’il me reste à parcourir. La lumière parcourt environ 300 000 km par seconde.La distance entre ici et chez moi est de 32 fois par seconde. La lumière envoyée par l’étoile vient de beaucoup plus loinet dure depuis longtemps. Pour cette tâche, l’astrophotographie est réalisée à l’aide d’un filtre à réseau de diffraction. Le logiciel analyse ensuite le spectre et extrait un graphique. Ce mouvement vivant et ondulant, est l’image des étoiles. J’ai fabriqué un système où l’eau calcaire coule sur des surfaces pendant six mois, accumulant des strates minérales. Ce processus géologique devient ici une «machine à remonter le temps», révélant les traces silencieuses du passé. L’installation s’étend dans trois lieux : une source, l’espace public, et la salle d’exposition. Elle offre au spectateur une expérience sensible du temps, entre géologie et cosmologie. 1. Cron est un phénomène et sources calcaires pétrifiantes. La source d'eau est située en hauteur et l'eau coule le long de la pente. Avec le temps, le calcaire se dépose, créant un environnement particulier. Cela à permit un dépôt de calcaire au fond du récipient . Lorsqu’il pleut, le calcaire accumulé va fondre et tomber au sol, formant une couronne autour de lui. Il a plu.Je sens l'humidité dans l'air.L'odeur terreuse, mélangée à celle d'herbe humide et de bois s'épaissit; et le bruit,quand à lui disparaît.L’évolution silencieuse commence.La terre absorbe l'eau de pluie. Celle-ci traverse le sol, progressivement, modifiant la terre. Autour de la source qui ruisselle, Tous les phénomènes sont organiquement liés. Mais ce n'est pas une question d'harmonie.Ils changent et existent ensemble dans le même temps et dans le même espace.Moi aussi je suis ici en tant qu'entité.Où va mon destin dans cet immense flux d'évolution qui s'est produit et qui se produira encore dans un futur lointain ? Nuit. Ciel. Après la pluie, des réseaux de lumières apparaissent au-dessus d’un ciel clair.Ces réseaux lumineux sont loin, mais tous sur cette terre, y compris moi, venons de là.Nous sommes tous des migrants nés dans les étoiles et installés sur Terre.C’est la raison pour laquelle nous nous sentons profondément nostalgique lorsque nous regardons là-haut ; peut-être parce que le souvenir des étoiles reste gravé dans notre abîme? Bien que la terre et le ciel semblent séparés, ils restent reliés par la mémoire des étoiles. Nuit encore. A présent, je deviens poussière et voyage au travers d’un vide obscur.En direction de la prochaine migration, un retour à la lumière.Encore une fois, je suis dans le courant de l'évolution.
